| Introduction | back to top |
You can always find the latest version and news regarding PSmplay at http://www.psxemu.com or at http://segu.psxemu.com, Segu's homepage. Segu already programmed several plugins for PSEmu Pro as well as for TheImpact emu.
Maybe you already tried other MDEC players, but PSmplay is different from those. PSmplay isn't only able to play Playstation .str files, (movies), it's also able to play .xa files (music). And, as a 3rd feature, it's even able to read .tim files (like jpgs for the psx).

Start PSmplay. Now click on "File" and select "Open Media File".
Make sure the file type is "Stream (Movie) File (*.str;*.mov;*.iki)" and
go to the place where your PSX data is stored.
Choose the file you want to view and click "Open". Now you can start the movie by pressing
on the "Play" button.
One of the best features of Psmplay is that it's even able to find hidden movie files on
any PSX CD. Though this feature doesn't work with all CD's yet, it also finds many movies
on CD's like FF8, Xenogears or Tekken 3 !
To start a search click on "File" and then on "Analyze CD-Rom". Choose the CD-Rom with the
data file. Now click on "START" to perform the search. This will take some time since it
goes through the whole CD. After this is completed, Psmplay shows you it's search results.
You can also save those so you can watch the movies at any time later ! Now choose the sectors
you want to view and press on the play button to start the playback.
Do the same as with the movie files but this time choose "XA Audio file (*.xa;*.str)" as data type. The bad thing with this format is that the file extensions aren't always .xa ... So you might want to view "All files (*.*)" and browse through the CD while searching for those files. After you found the correct file, press "Play" to start the audio file playback. When you want to listen to another Track, change the Audio channel under "Options" -> "XA Audio Channel select".
Again do the same as with the movie files, and now choose "Screen Image Data (*.tim)". Not many files are using un-extracted images, so you might have difficulties finding any.

Options | back to top |
You can either choose normal video size, 2x bigger (suggested) or even 3x bigger than the original. You should choose this depending on the movie quality. The smaller the window is, the higher is the quality of the movie. We suggest you 2x size, since this is the best way between size and quality.
Psmplay is able to disable those annoying black bars at the top and at the bottom of the movies. This allows much better viewing of the movies, especially on TV screens. To activate this feature, go to "Control", and select "Aspect 4:3".
Psmplay has the possibility to disable certain features like the picture of MDEC movies or the sound. You can do this if you only want to get a specific part of the movie of to get faster playback on slow machines. Those two options can be found in the menu "Options", they're "Disable Sound" and "Disable MDEC Image".
You can tell Psmplay to automaticly start playback of movies/Audio, or to automaticly repeat them when they're finished ! It's even able to automaticly calculate the best screen rate for any movies. To activate those features, go to the Options menu and either activate "Auto Start", "Auto Repeat" or "Auto Calc Screen Ratio".

As much as possible, I want to reproduce data on PlayStation with PC. For example, VAG - Sound Data (not XA), SEQ - Like a MIDI, etc ....
